Wikileaks

I hate to admit, but prior to the TED talk I didn't know much about Wikileaks other than I always heard it was never credible just by hearsay of others. I don't follow politics or the news enough to know about when they leaked any viable information that I can recall.

At first, I kind of thought Wikileaks sounded reckless after reading a few articles and watching the video. People could risk their lives or their jobs to deliver credible information to eventually make it to public eye. Even if it is anonymous and all links to sources are destroyed after information is verifiable, it just seems... scary? Scary, but useful. The public and the people deserve to know what is going on. If people are willing to risk their livelihood to deliver the leaks at all costs, so be it. Their sacrifice and knowledge opens up eyes, minds, and mouths to discussions. It may completely change views from what we thought we knew, to unveiling the truth of what we really didn't know. I find that both scary, brave, and helpful to the people.

There are things that happen behind closed doors and in secure email domains that may concern our safety or our finances, or our politicians running this country that we would have never of known if somebody didn't hack in, or capture footage and leak it to the public eye. For example, I have a lot of mixed feelings about war and what our country chooses to do on foreign soil. Especially since it seems like this huge mystery to a lot of US citizens and we have been left in the dark. And that is where I believe we deserve any information that may be out there. So for anything to leak or be captured on film such as what was shown in the TED talk that may happen overseas, I strongly believe we have a right to view or be aware of that information.

Going back to privacy and expression of speech tying into the last paragraph, I also believe we are entitled to these leaks in exchange to the government hacking our information as they please. If they can pry through our emails or what we search, why can't we know what information they share as well? As petty as that may sound, it's my opinion on the matter. It's frightening to know the government watches our every move online and our free speech can be viewed all across the globe, if put out there to view. Nothing is private out there by any means. It's all out there for the world to see, no matter what it may be.
