Campus Radio

I've never really considered the idea of a student radio station but I personally think it would be a great idea. We only have a select few stations around here so adding something else into the mix would be great. It just would seem difficult to attract a specific demographic considering everybody listens to radio for different reasons. I think surveying this maybe in classes or online could be a solid start to a station. Just like this post: ask students what they want to hear.
I personally would like either a talk show, discussing current events maybe locally or nationally. Even things happening in colleges currently would be nice. But it has to be fun and catchy enough to draw people's attention and make them want to tune in.

I think somebody, or a group of students, should consider forming a podcast. I tune into podcasts for information and advice. With so many people continuing education constantly in one space, that is a plethora of knowledge in itself. If they were to form a podcast or radio station, like I said, I think they should discuss local matters or maybe even just treating it like the diary of a college student. Heck, maybe even a mixture of both. Many of us are not aware of any of the things going on around us at both local and national levels. Listening to our peers break things down and debate current topics could be good. As far as using the podcast as college advice column, we all have tough things we endure throughout our college careers, wouldn't it be nice if we all knew we weren't alone? Sometimes just hearing somebody else's experiences helps humble and consider certain aspects of our own lives. I listen to this podcast called Millennial produced by host Megan Tan, which discusses many post college challenges and triumphs. This podcast is so, so, so nice to listen to if you really don't know where you're at in life and you're another millennial just trying to find your place in the world. Now imagine a podcast where current college students discuss their academic or relevant life issues out loud. For the world, or listening peers, to consume. It may really help fellow students out.

If students wanted to fund a production such as a radio station or a podcast, they would need to get funding from sponsors. Which I think is totally doable around here. They could try talking to all local businesses by sharing the ideas for the project and pitching a solid sale. We have small businesses pop up all around the county. It gives businesses more advertisement for cheaper prices, and it gives students some funds to work with. Not only does initial advertising go a ways, but it may also open the door to bigger business opportunities over time.
